What is an ISBN Number?

ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number and is a 13-digit number that identifies published books. Once assigned to a book, an ISBN can never be reused. An ISBN is used as an identifier by publishers, booksellers, libraries, internet retailers and other supply chain participants for ordering, listing, sales records and stock control purposes. The ISBN identifies the registrant as well as the specific title, edition (new or revised edition) and format (hard cover, soft cover or digital/electronic book).

An different/new ISBN number is also required when:

  • there are different book formats published for a book, i.e. a hard cover book, a soft cover book and a digital/electronic book.

  • the published book is revised/updated.

What is a Barcode?

A barcode is the graphical representations of a book’s ISBN and price. Barcodes are used on physical books, allowing them to be machine read, and facilitating automated sales and inventory tracking. It is a requirement for retailers.
